Wax study on slate of Ios, by William Wyon, the goddess, the morning star at her forehead, loosley draped and with billowing cloak, flying left, scattering flowers on the earth below, white wax, overall diam. 64mm. Estimate £ 100-200 The study is undated and it is not certain if it was worked up into a medal. Ios, the Greek goddess of the dawn, is here depicted in the traditional manner popularised in the late 18th century in England by the sculptor John Flaxman. Wyon freely admitted that from a very early age he was greatly influenced by Flaxman.
