A Great War 1915 ´Battle of Loos´ Casualty Group of Three to Private J.H. Pay, Gloucestershire Regiment 1914-15 Star (12138 Pte. J.H. Pay. Glouc:R.); British War and Victory Medals (12138 Pte. J.H. Pay. Glouc.R.), extremely fine (3) Estimate £ 120-140 12318 Private James Henry Pay, born Kingsdown, Kent, ´he enlisted in the 10th (Service) Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment in Cheltenham in September 1914 and went to France to serve with "A" Company on the 8th August 1915. He may have been a survivor of the attack on the 25th September when the Gloucesters were first in action at Loos, only 100 surviving unwounded at the end of the day. Sufficiently reinforced, they were later detailed for an attack on enemy positions west of the Lens-La Bassee road on the 13th October and after a preliminary bombardment and gas attack, two companies went over the top at 2pm, but failed to reach their objectives owing to heavy rifle and machine gun fire, being forced to lie in the open until nightfall, when they fell back on their original positions. Casualties amounted to 150 killed wounded and missing. Private Pay was one of those killed. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Loos Memorial.´ (Leaving All That Was Dear, refers).
