Two helmets of the Fife Mounted Rifle Volunteers A black leather helmet, bearing the Thane of Fife in white metal, superimposed on a rudimentary Thistle Star formed of brass saltire cross and nickel-plated star, bearing the number IX in the lower angle, above the FMRV monogram in brass, on a nickel scroll inscribed PRO ARIS ET FOCIS, brass plume-holder mounted on a four-pointed star formed of thin sheet metal, a nickel-plated chin-chain on leather backing attached to white metal rosettes bearing crude Thistle Star device, quilted cotton internal headband (the helmet lacking metal edging to peak, and without plume); and a helmet of the same pattern, but with red Morocco leather internal headband, complete with peak-edging and a short white drooping horsehair plume (peak and edging distorted, rear peak largely detached) (2) See illustration of first item Estimate £ 150-250
