Lincoln, Abraham. Sixteenth President of the United States; born in a humble log cabin in Kentucky, self-educated, lawyer, Whig Party leader, State legislator and Congressman from Illinois, his passionate and thoughtful speeches and debates, notably against Stephen A. Douglas, brought him to the national forefront, Lincoln's presidential victory in 1860 ultimately led to the Secession Crisis and the Civil War; his deep humanity in meeting the challenges of the war that divided the nation cast him as the one America's greatest and most revered presidents. Document Signed "Abraham Lincoln" as President. 1 page, folio, partially printed, Washington, D.C. March 23, 1865. Lincoln confers on James C. Duane the rank of Lieutenant Colonel by Brevet, the 6th day of July 1864 for "meritorious and faithful services in the field in the campaign from the Rapidan to the James and particularly for distinguished professional services in the operations before Petersburg" (referring to the Overland Campaign and the Siege of Petersburg). Lincoln signs lower right, while Edwin M. Staunton signs as Secretary of War lower middle. Blue blind embossed seal lower left of U.S. eagle; red ink notation upper left. Some lightening of the ink but full and clear. A fine document. Framed, 19 5/8 x 23 5/8".
