Custer, Elizabeth "Libbie" née Bacon. 1842-1933. Wife of Brevet Major General George Armstrong Custer, one of the few army wives to accompany her husband in the field - during the Civil War and Custer's subsequent postings on the Great Plains where he was the commanding officer of the U.S. Cavalry; left nearly destitute after her husband's death at Little Big Horn, became an outspoken advocate for his legacy through her popular books and lectures for the course of her six decades of widowhood. Group of Ephemera kept by Libbie Custer, and later by her assistant-companion Margaret Flood. Includes: 3 ½ x 5 7/8" B&W of Libbie which she signs on back in ink "Elizabeth B. Custer"; 6 ¼ x 4 ¼" photo, framed, of her being acknowledged by dignitaries in a stadium, she signs her name in blue ink below; B&W photo postcards (2) - Unveiling of Custer monument in Monroe MI 1910, President Taft and Gov. Warner viewing Custer's home, Monroe MI 1910; small B&W photo noted "our house" on back;
Typed Folio of the "Estate of Elizabeth B. Custer Deceased" on Samuel Marx, Appraisers-Auctioneers, NY stationary - a long list of bequeathments which included a number of Gen. Custer's personal effects and related, and their ca. 1933 appraised value; Westchester - Hudson River - West Point promotional booklet with Gen. Custer image on front, Libbie writes above "To my friends Patrick and Margaret Flood" and signs her name; a 1912 copy of Ezra Meeker's "Personal Experiences on the Oregon Trail", her autograph inside; Nov. 1929 issue of the "The Black Hills Engineer"; "The Teepee Book - Custer Battle Number", June 1916, inked at top "Miss H. Etta Smith"; and miscellaneous newspaper clippings largely related to Gen. Custer and Libbie's relentless advocacy of his legacy. Good to Fine.
