Custer, Elizabeth "Libbie" née Bacon. 1842-1933. Wife of Brevet Major General George Armstrong Custer, one of the few army wives to accompany her husband in the field - during the Civil War and Custer's subsequent postings on the Great Plains where he was the commanding officer of the U.S. Cavalry; left nearly destitute after her husband's death at Little Big Horn, became an outspoken advocate for his legacy through her popular books and lectures for the course of her six decades of widowhood. Libbie's 1926 Address Book and a Group of Ephemera kept by Libbie Custer, and later by her assistant-companion Margaret Flood. Her 7 ½ x 4 ¾" Address Book, which she inscribes on front page "Elizabeth B. Custer 71 Park Ave 1926 December" - a number of entries; a receipt (dog vignette), Indianapolis, Oct. 5, 1903 for Libbie's $1800 purchase of a round the world tour; a Bank of River Raisin, Monroe MI $10 (Good-VG) with pencil and pen notation on a small envelope "Mrs Custer $10 Bill 1862 Given by [unclear]; a Veteran's Administration Pension check for $100, June 4, 1931 "to the order of Elizabeth C [sic] Custer" with the accompanying typed letter from City Bank Farmers Trust Co which notes that the wrong middle initial is used on the check; and a 2 ½ page Jan. 28, 1918 letter from a Mrs Albert S. Johnson of Indianapolis to Libbie discussing how her family is related to General Custer which includes a hand-drawn family tree to that end (age toning and foxing). Good-Fine.
