CRISTOFORO FOPPA, called CARADOSSO (ca. 1452-1526/7)
Maritime Scene. Round plaquette. Bronze, 57mm. At the seashore, a man, his back turned removes his cloak, a nude male to his right, head upturned, doffs his robe; at left is a seated fisherman, in the middle distance, a group of men wade near a sailing vessel, walls of a city in the far distance. Molinier 153; Planiscig 383; Pope Hennessy 51, fig. 77; Ricci ii, pp 71-2, no. 98. The central figure of the composition is reproduced on a doorway from Cremona's Palazzo Stanga Trecco, now in the Louvre. This piece here was exhibited in 1961 at the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, Hamburg as part of the exhibition "Sechs Sammler Stellen aus Ausgestellt".
