Monroe, James Fifth President of the United States (1758-1831, served 1817-25); earlier, a Revolutionary War soldier, US Secretary of State, US Minister to France and to the United Kingdom, and Governor of Virginia. Pair of partly engraved Documents Signed "James Monroe" as President, each 1 page, oblong folio, on vellum, Washington, December 6, 1821 and October 20, 1824. Land grants, the earlier granting to "Caleb Lincoln who was a private in Colonel Crane´s Regiment of Artillery in the late Massachusetts line...One Hundred Acres" and the latter selling William Barnes just over 80 acres near Steubenville, OH. Signed resepctively by Josiah Meigs and George Graham of the General Land Office. Both toned and soiled, with fold wear, the second also with missing seal, about VG. [2]
