Music: John Philip Sousa and Others A most unusual gathering of items, featuring a Typewritten Letter Signed "John Philip Sousa," 1 page, 4to, on stationery imprinted with his New York address (but written in Willow Grove, PA) and portrait, August 2, 1924. He writes follow composer Charles W Cadman of Hollywood, CA, "You new March ´Arizona´ came yesterday and we rehearsed it and I have put it on the program somewhere between the 10th and 15th of the month...It doesnt [sic] surprise me that you had a Cadman night at Hollywood...I hope your ´Witch of Salem´ will be a great success..." Pencil note, folds, toning, VG. With TLS by actor "Lionel Barrymore," US Ambassador to Denmark "Ruth Bryan Owen," and conductor "Leopold Stokowski" (who writes "I shall be happy to conduct your new composition"), and opera singer "Gladys Swarthout," all to Cadman or (in Swarthout´s case) his daughter. Stokowski with dark stains, Good, the rest VG. With an additional TLS from a Soviet radio director. With nine other items concerning Cadman´s career, including a program for a Los Angeles tribute to him in 1970. Charles W Cadman (1881-1946) composed chamber music, operas, and songs, incorporating popular influence such as ragtime; he was noted especially for taking inspiration from Native American music and legends.
