Monet, Claude French painter (1840-1926) whose work gave the Impressionist school its name and its epitome. Especially good content Autograph Letter Signed "Claude Monet," in pencil, in French, 2-1/2 pages, 8vo, on stationery imprinted with his address, Giverny, June 28, 1917. The aging legend writes his friend and champion, art critic Custave Geffroy in Paris, that "I welcomed Mr. Valin but he came at the wrong time. I blame him for disturbing me in my work. All the more so, since for some time I have been very discouraged and on precisely the day of his arrival I felt myself wanting to work. I had to listen in spite of myself to his ramblings...In the future you must warn me when you send someone...I am again in the darkest depression about everything I am doing." With original handwritten envelope. Very scant foxing, soiling and minor wear along fold, otherwise sharp and VG/F. At this stage of his life, Monet suffered from cataracts that seriously impaired his vision, but he continued to paint even as World War I raged just 150 miles away. April had seen the disastrous Nivelle Offensive, which had punctured French morale at home and in the ranks. Despite his depression, Monet would continue to paint, including a series of images of weeping willows created to commemmorate France´s fallen soldiers. With transcript and translation. [2]
