Fred Marsh was born at Springbourne, Hampshire on 6 January 1879 and was an errand boy upon his joining the Royal Navy in August 1894. Present aboard H.M.S.Terrible in Natal and then off China in 1900, he remained in the service during the Great War and was discharged in March 1919.
