Joseph Tierney was born in 1866 at Stoke-upon-Trent and was a collier by trade upon his joining the 13th Hussars at Pontefract in September 1888. Transferred to the Reserve in August 1896, he was recalled to serve with the 14th King's Hussars from October 1899 during the Boer War and served in South Africa from December 1899 until August 1902. Discharged again on 23 August 1902, he settled at Normanton, Yorkshire.
Returned to the fold during the Great War, Tierney served in France with the 4th Battalion, King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry from April 1915 until December 1917.
