A likely unique group of four awarded to Trooper J. McCarthy, Commander-in-Chief's Bodyguard, later South African Army Service Corps, who served with the Kimberley Town Guard and Kimberley Horse during the siege before serving with the District Horse, Corps of Guides
Queen's South Africa 1899-1902, 5 clasps, Defence of Kimberley, Paardeberg, Driefontein, Transvaal, South Africa 1901 (Pte J. MCarthy. Kimberley Town Gd:); British War and Victory Medals (Dvr. J. P. McCarthy. S.A.S.C.); Kimberley Star 1899-1900, unnamed, hallmarked to the reverse for Birmingham with the letter 'a', mounted for wear, good very fine (4)
Justin Macarthy appears on the Kimberley Siege Account and Medal Roll with the Kimberley Light Horse. He further served with the Town Guard from 28 December 1899 to February 1900, the District Horse from February 1900 to April 1900, and the Corps Of Guides for just 42 days. Finally he joined the Commander-in-Chief's Bodyguard from 11 November 1900 until 2 January 1901 when he appears to have left military service. McCarthy was later to see service during the Great War with the South African Service Corps; sold together with a copy of the Kimberley Siege Account and Medal Roll.
