Ernest Taylor was born in Midsomer Norton, Somerset in 1873 and worked as a miner before he enlisted into the Somerset Light Infantry in July 1981, having previously served with the 4th Battalion. He served abroad extensively with the 1st Battalion, spending two years in Gibraltar from 1891 until being sent to the Punjab Frontier in India for five years from 1893 through 1899. Upon his return home in the February, Taylor then transferred to the Army Reserve, only to be recalled 'under special army order' in October. The following month, Taylor was posted to South Africa to serve in the Boer War. He spent just under three years out there with the 2nd Battalion and upon his return home, he finally discharged from service in July 1903.

However, the call to duty never left him, and under a new service number '21531' Taylor enlisted into the 4th Supply Company in August 1915 as a Private. By the end of 1916, he was serving with the Royal Defence Corps, a home defence corps whose duties were connected to the defence and protection of the British Isles during the Great War. At this time, Taylor was circa 40 years of age. He discharged from service in 1917 as he was found no longer physically fit for war service.

All three medals and accompanying clasps are confirmed on the respective medal rolls.
