The Royal Sovereign class was a group of eight battleships built in the 1890s after a review by the Naval Board culminating in £21 million being voted in the Naval Defence Act 1889 to update and modernize. They became known as the pre-Dreadnoughts as they were superseded and made obsolete by the Dreadnoughts built 1905-07. The Royal Sovereign was for a brief time flagship of the Channel Squadron. Sadly, with one exception they did not take part in World War One as by then they were scrapped or used as target ships.
