Constance Frederica "Eka" Gordon-Cumming (1837 - 1924) came from a wealthy Scottish family, she travelled the world recording her experiences in books and paintings. Her siblings were also travellers and adventurers; Alexander in Canada, Roualeyn in Africa as a big game hunter. John another brother was a planter in Ceylon and William a soldier in India. Self- taught her early work was in the Scottish Isles, helped by Sir Edward Landseer. Thereafter she travelled extensively in Asia and the Pacific; she was the first to paint active volcanoes in Hawaii. She received much criticism from male contemporaries was she did not fit the held view of a Victorian lady, but all agreed her art was special.

Her works are held in The Honolulu Museum of Art, The Oakland Museum of California and the Yosemite Museum.
