M.M. London Gazette 8 December 1916.

James Talbot Carter was born at Chatham, Kent in 1882, attesting with the 8th London Brigade, Royal Field Artillery (Territorial Force) on 26 May 1909. When the war began he was initially embodied with 1/6 London Field Artillery Brigade, entering the war in France on 17 March 1915 with the 1/17th Battery.

The 1/6th London Brigade was designated the 236th Brigade during the Great War however Carter's Battery appears to have remained the same for much of the conflict. It was with this unit that he was awarded his M.M. at some stage likely during the Somme Offensive.

Carter was only posted away on 12 May 1918 to the 19th Corps Signal School, returning to 236th Brigade on 21 May. He was demobilised on 9 April 1919, sold together with copied research and a postcard photograph of the recipient in uniform.

Further entitled to the Territorial Force Efficiency Medal.
