The 1917 M.M. awarded to Sapper J. W. Wilson, 253 Tunnelling Company, Royal Engineers

Military Medal, G.V.R. (102935 Sapr. J. W. Wilson. 253/T'lg: Coy. R.E.), somewhat polished, overall very fine

M.M. London Gazette 11 May 1917.

John W. Wilson entered the war on 6 October 1915, he served with the 253rd Tunnelling Company 'The Moles' earning his award with them during the Great War. Discharged on 9 February 1919 his medals were issued to him at Southfield Farm, Castle Eden, County Durham. This location suggests that Wilson was an original member of the 1st Northumberland Field Company rather than one of the Welsh Coalminers who were combined with the unit to form the 253rd Tunnelling Company. His British War and Victory Medals were returned in 1924 and re-issued in May 1925.
