A good demolitions D.C.M. group of four awarded to Lance Corporal G. Brown, Royal Engineers, for replacing a defective fuse under artillery and machine gun fire to destroy a borehole

D.C.M. London Gazette 3 September 1918, the original citation states:

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He was ordered to blow up a pumping engine and borehole. Owning to a defect in the fuse the charges did not explode. He waited twenty minutes and then returned under heavy shell and machine-gun fire, put in a fresh fuse, and successfully completed the demolition when the enemy were close on the borehole.'

George Brown was born at Wigan, Lancashire in 1895, attesting on 2 January 1915 with the Royal Engineers. Entering the war in France on 6 June 1915 with the 87th Field Company, this unit was attached to the 12th Division for the duration of the war.

Prior to Brown winning his award the Division had been in action at Arras, Amiens and Bapaume. Appointed Acting Sergeant on 26 January 1919 he was demobilised on 28 March 1919, sold together with copied research.
