One of 30 D.C.M.s awarded to the Battalion from a total of 118 to the Regiment.
D.C.M. London Gazette 26 January 1918, the original recommendation states:
'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When all his company officers had become casualties he took command and secured the objective, in spite of heavy machine gun fire on his flank. By his contempt of personal danger and splendid spirits he set a magnificent example to the men under his command.'
Samuel Averill entered the war on 10 September 1914 and is entitled to a 1914 Star Trio with clasp.
