John Stanley Smith was born in March 1923 and enlisted in the Royal Air Force in January 1939, when he was attached to the Fleet Air Arm as an A.C. 2. Having then served in post-war operations in Palestine, and been advanced to Chief Technician, he was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in January 1957 (AMO N212/1957 refers).
