Robert Stoddard served with the 5th (Cumberland) Battalion Border Regiment which was mobilised from 1 September 1939 and later converted to the 110th Regiment, Royal Armoured Corps on 1 November 1941 which served with the 11th Armoured Brigade, 42nd Armoured Division. Later it became the 11th Tank Brigade which was disbanded in November 1943. The 5th Battalion, Border Regiment was reconstituted in April 1944 and it spent the rest of the War as a training battalion in U.K. His Coronation Medal was earned with the Council of Edinburgh and Lothians Area British Legion.
