Frederick Upshall was a joiner by trade and into the Dorset Regiment on 11 March 1914 and was embodied on 4 August 1914 was posted to India on 9 October 1914. He was posted to Mesopotamia on 18 February 1916. He was transferred on 24 September 1916 as a result of being dangerously ill. Having recovered he was wounded in action on 28 September 1917 as a result of a machine gun bullet to the left foot and was admitted to No.31 Stationary Hospital at Baghdad on 03 October 1917 and was then admitted to hospital in Basra on 27 October 1917. He was then posted to 1/4 Depot at India on 29 October 1917 and admitted to the War Hospital at Bombay on 5 November 1917. He returned to the Field in January 1919 and was disembodied on 14 April 1919 and gave his home address as 26 Fernside Road, Poole, Dorset.
