Frederick John Moorcroft was born in 1896 and was the son of Mr and Mrs R. K. Moorcroft of Farmhurst, 6 Mill Road, Epsom, Surrey. He was a clerk before he attested into the Royal Flying Corps at South Farnborough on 18 November 1915. He joined No.42 Squadron on 1 July 1917 with the rank of A.M.1. The squadron were equipped with RE8s which were mainly used for reconnaissance as well as spotting for the artillery and taking aerial photographs. Moorcroft was killed the following month on 3 August 1917 having served as a wireless operator and is buried in the Maple Leaf Cemetery, Neuve-Eglise, Belgium. Corporal Benjamin Lawson was also killed on the same day and is buried in the same cemetery.
