Cecil Henry Ravenhill Hulbert originally served with the Honourable Artillery Company and first entered the war in France on 29 December 1914. He is commissioned into the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve on 26 February 1915 with the rank of Temporary Sub Lieutenant. He was serving with Anson Battalion and disembarked at Malta on 29 August 1915. However, he embarked for England on 15 October 1915 and was to suffer from a number of illnesses until he was eventually passed as fit on 22 February 1916. He returned to France but was admitted to the Duchess of Westminster Hospital at Le Touquet on 29 October 1917 suffering from severe appendicitis; he was returned to England on 2 November 1917 and was admitted to the Royal Free Hospital the same day. Hulbert was promoted to Temporary Lieutenant on 12 July 1918 and was demobilised on 12 July 1919. He applied for his medals in 1920 and at the time was living at 4 Avonmore Mansions, Kensington, London W14. With the outbreak of the Second World War, he was commissioned 1 February 1940 as a Pilot Officer in the Balloon Branch. Hulbert was promoted to Flying Officer on 1 February 1942.
