(x) Victory Medal 1914-19 (Matron A. E. Swain.), some polishing but otherwise about very fine

Alice Elizabeth Swain was born in 1868 and was the second child to Maria Gosford Dwight and John William Swain and was eventually one of nine siblings. She likely grew up in Dunstable, Bedfordshire and by the age of 13 she was living at 133 West Street, Dunstable. By 1901, at the age of 28 years old, Swain was working as a nurse in Stockton and Thornaby Surgical Hospital in Stockton on Tees, County Durham. Come the outbreak of the First World War, Swain enlisted on 12 May 1915 and served at Egypt with the Matron Egyptian Hospital Unit at Tanta Hospital. For her services she was further entitled to the 1914-15 Star and the British War Medal. On the 29 February 1924, she was gazetted for her being awarded the Order of the Nile, fifth class, by the King of Egypt for her work as Matron in the State Domains Dispensary. By 1932, Swain was recorded to have been living in 6 Midfield Parade, Barnehurst, Kent before her death that same year on the 13 September at 23 Devonshire Street, Marylebone. She was 64 years old. She is buried at Bexley Non-War Cemetery in Kent.
