A Victory Medal to Lance Sergeant W. Clarke, 20th Canadian Infantry, who was awarded a Military Medal in 1919 for his Great War service

William Clarke was born at Worley, England on 11 July 1875 and had originally served in the Lancashire Fusiliers for 14 years and 6 months and then became a fireman. He enlisted at Toronto, Canada on 3 January 1916 into the 169th Battalion and embarked for England on 17 October 1916 on board the S.S. Metagama arriving in England on 28 October 1916. Promoted to Acting Sergeant on 23 November 1916 but reverted to Private on 28 February 1918. Clarke was promoted to Lance Corporal on 10 August 1918 and to Corporal on 25 September 1918, he was wounded on 17 October 1918 and promoted to Lance Sergeant two days later. He returned to Witley on 23 October 1918. Clarke returned to Canada on 7 May 1919 and was discharged on 18 May 1919.
