Mercantile Marine War Medal 1914-18 (John McT Taylor), very fine
John McTaggart Taylor was born at Appledore, Devon in 1881, the son of John Henry Taylor, of 2 Silver St., Appledore. In the 1911 census he is recorded as the Mate of the vessel Lilla and in 1917 the Mate of the schooner, Reward based out of Swansea.
H.M.S. Reward was sunk on 12 March 1917 enroute from Falmouth to Guernsey with a cargo of coal. She was a wooden three-masted schooner built in 1878. The German submarine UC-72 sank her by gunfire at position 49° 55' N, 03° 15' W, south of Start Point. Taylor was presumed drowned and commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial.
