(x) Queen's South Africa 1899-1902, 4 clasp, Tugela Heights, Relief of Ladysmith, Transvaal, Laing's Nek (993 Pte J. Sewell, Impl: Lt Infy), very fine

John Sewell worked as a book keeper before he enlisted into the Imperial Light Infantry on 28 January 1901 at Durban. He then transferred to the Menne's Scouts under the new service number 132. This new unit was small and only enlisted the highest quality soldiers because they partook in particularly dangerous operations in the Transvaal, often by night. Their primary role in the war was to protect the railway communications between Natal and Pretoria. He was later promoted to Lance Corporal before the unit disbanded on 1 January 1902.
