(x) Queen's South Africa 1899-1902, 4 clasps, Cape Colony, Transvaal, Wittebergen, South Africa 1901 (5050 Sgt W. Pywell, 8th Coy 4th Imp: Yeo:), one minor edge bruise otherwise very fine

William Henry Pywell was born in St Werburg, Derbyshire and worked with the Derbyshire Yeomanry Cavalry before enlisting into the Coldstream Guards when he was 18 years old on the 29 July 1897. His original service number was 982, however according to his service papers, he served 14 days before discharging from service on the 14 August. He then continued to work as a saddler before enlisting again two and a half years later on 9 January 1900, this time for the Imperial Yeomanry with the new service number 5050. Pywell served at home for his first month before quickly being sent to serve in South Africa between 28 January 1900 - 8 June 1901. Not long after he was deployed, he was promoted to corporal on 20 March 1900. On his service records, it is noted that Pywell was "discharged at his own request from further service in connection with the war in S. Africa 5.8.01."
