George Bishop was born at Chelsea, London in 1860 and attested at Bow Street Police Court on 9 September 1879 with the 75th Regiment of Foot. This unit was amalgamated into the Gordon Highlanders just before they were deployed to Egypt in August 1882. Bishop remained with the unit in Egypt throughout the following tumult, taking part in the failed Gordon relief expedition and seeing action at El-Teb and Tamaai. Returning home in September 1885 he was discharged in 1891.
