Edward O'Donnell was born around 1872 in Bengal, East Indies. He likely returned home to Letterkenny, County Donegal, where he enlisted to join the Royal Garrison Artillery, aged 15. He remained in the army for at least the next 22 years when in 1907 he was awarded the Army L.S. & G.C. Medal. He obtained the rank of Sergeant.
