(x) Army L.S. & G.C., E.VII.R. (27092 C.S.Mjr: G. C. Saunders. R.E.), very fine
George Charles Saunders was born in 1872 in Alverstoke, Gosport, Hampshire and was working as a copper smith when he enlisted with the Royal Engineers at Gosport on 5 November 1892, having had some previous service in the Royal Hampshire Regiment. He was posted as a Sapper and attended the School of Submarine Diving at Portsmouth in 1894 and 1895, being graded 'superior' in his second year of the course. That same year in July he found himself promoted Lance Corporal.
Saunders served in Ceylon for about four years, being stationed there from 13 December 1897 until 2 March 1902. Whist abroad in Ceylon, he was advanced 2nd Corporal in June 1897 and to Corporal in March 1900. Immediately upon his return home, he was married to Miss Kate Ann Westbrook at Hampshire on 3 March. The couple appears to have moved to Broughty Ferry in Dundee, Scotland where he re-engaged for a second term of engagement in August 1902 and was rated Sergeant a few years later in January 1905. Saunders served at home for the next several years, with their daughter Eva May being born at Broughty Ferry on 2 January 1906. However, he was not to be at home for his daughter's first birthday, as he saw further overseas service being posted to Hong Kong from November 1906. The Regiment returned home on 12 December 1909, where Saunders was to stay for the remainder of his service and was promoted Company Sergeant Major on 11 January 1910.
He was discharged upon the termination of his second period of engagement on 4 November 1913 at Chatham, having serving with the Colours for 21 years, being described as 'thoroughly reliable' with 'exemplary' conduct. After his discharge he received a pension and intended to reside at 531 Canterbury Street, Gillingham, Kent.
