James Smith was born circa 1824 in Market Tavington, Wells, where he worked as a shoemaker until 23 July 1842 when he enlisted at Bath with the 62nd (Wiltshire) Regiment of Foot, aged eighteen. He served with the 62nd Foot for a few years before volunteering to transfer to the 53rd (Shropshire) Regiment of Foot in late 1846. Smith was advanced Corporal with his new unit in March 1848 and then to Sergeant in February 1852. The bulk of Smith's length of service was spent overseas, where he was stationed in the East Indies for over seventeen years. He was finally discharged at his own request after serving with the Colours for 21 years on 14 August 1861, thereafter transferring to serve as Sergeant with the Cornwall Rangers Militia headquartered in Bodmin.
