Joseph McCaffrey was born at Newfoundland, St. John's. He appears on the 1851 census as a Drummer Boy with the Royal Artillery, aged 14, living with his mother and two siblings at Woolwich, London. A John McCaffrey is entitled to the Crimea 1854-56 medal with clasps for Inkerman and Sebastopol (No.847). By 1861 he is a Staff Sergeant at Woolwich Barracks and in 1871 he is a Quartermaster Sergeant at Woolwich. He was promoted to Lieutenant on 24 November 1877 (London Gazette 23 November 1877) and served at East Stonehouse, Devon. He was further promoted to Captain on 13 March 1883 (London Gazette 3 April 1883) and served in Gravesend, Kent and during this period served with the Coast Brigade. McCaffery was placed on retired pay on 2 September 1891 and moved to 40 Parthenia Road, Fulham, London. He died on 27 May 1899.
