The Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal awarded to Private J. Allen, Military Labourers, a native African who spent his entire service career in Barbados
Army L.S. & G.C., V.R. (22 James Allen Military Laborers), very fine
James Allen was born at Pappua, Africa and attested for the Military Labourers Regiment at Sierra Leone on 21 May 1847. He spent his entire service life in Barbados and was in possession of four Good Conduct Badges.
Allen was discharged on 31 March 1868, as a result of the report from the Inspecting Medical Officer's assessment which had taken place on 29 January 1868, where he was found unfit for further service. He intended to live permanently in Barbados and did not return to Africa. He died in September 1868 aged 38 and is buried in St. Leonard's Chapel, St.Michael, Barbados.
