Joseph White was born at Rosenallis, Queen's, Ireland and enlisted on 21 June 1823 into the 58th Foot and attested on the 24 June 1823. He served in the East Indies from 30 December 1828 and was promoted to Corporal on 1 October 1842 and again to Sergeant on 1 January 1843 an completed his service on 31 July 1848. He was to spend 10 years and 6 months in Ceylon and a total of 4 years and 7 months in the Australian Colonies. He began to suffer from Chronic Rheumatism in 1846 whilst serving in New Zealand which he put down to cold, age and military service and was finally discharged at Chatham on 23 January 1849.
