Daniel McCartney was born at Ayr, Scotland and attested into the 1st Foot on 3 October 1848. He transferred to the Royal Newfoundland Company on 1 September 1850 and was promoted to Corporal on 1 November 1852, Sergeant 28 March 1856, Colour Sergeant 4 October 1860 and to Quartermaster Sergeant on 6 February 1862. He transferred again, this time to the Royal Canadian Rifle Regiment on 1 December 1862 and became Sergeant Major on 11 January 1864 and Quartermaster (without purchase) on 29 July 1867. He was appointed to the 49th Foot on 28 June 1876 and was given the rank of Honorary Captain London Gazette 23 August 1881. McCartney retired on 7 February 1883 promoted once more to Honorary Major.
He is entitled to a Canada General Service Medal 1866-70 with clasps Fenian Raid 1866 & Fenian Raid 1870. This medal was sent to him at Queensbury House, Edinburgh where he served as Governor. He died on 2 May 1905.
