Army L.S. & G.C., V.R. (560. Sergt. Wm. Cotterill Cape. Md. Rifles), very fine

John William Cotterill was born at Pangbourne, Berkshire and was a druggist by trade, he originally attested into the 7th Dragoon Guards as William Cotterill at Middlesex on 29 April 1845. He was promoted to Corporal 1 January 1852 and to Sergeant on 23 September 1855. He married Martha Kingston on 22 March 1860 at St.Andrew's Church, Enfield. Cotterill transferred to the Cape Mounted Riflemen on 30 April 1861 and spent a total of 3 years and 10 months in South Africa. Cotterill whilst on duty suffered a fracture and anaemia as a result of falling from his horse which resulted in him being discharged at Netley on 3 July 1866. He moved to Long Ditton, Surrey where in the 1871 census he was noted as working at Kingston Dispensary and also a Chelsea Pensioner which was crossed out. He died in 1873 and is buried in Long Ditton.
