Tom Hetherington was born on 30 November 1922 in Seaton, Cumberland. His Second World War awards were sent to 'Officer Commanding, 64 Training Regiment Royal Artillery, Milne Lines, Park Hall Camp, Oswestry, Salop'. Post-War, he served with the 1st (Guards) Parachute Battalion in Palestine from September 1945. Hetherington seems to appear as one of five R.E.M.E. men and being the only Sergeant. The Battalion had the distinction of escorting the High Commissioner out of Jerusalem to the airport on 14 May 1948. This was to mark the last day of the British Mandate in Palestine. The Division was later disbanded in 1948. He died in April 1978 at Workington.
