James Alfred Scott was born at West Hartlepool, Yorkshire on 28 June 1899 and attested as Boy Class II on 14 May 1915, seeing his first service afloat on 4 June 1916 with Duncan. He was with her when she landed Royal Marines in Athens to force the abdication of King Constantine. Posted ashore to Victory I on 11 April 1917 with the rank of Acting Signaller, being confirmed in that rank in January 1918.
At the end of the war he was service with the destroyer Velox, which served in the Baltic during Operation Red Trek, men of that vessel also took part in the 1919 Mutiny. Scott was appointed Yeoman of Signal with Dragon on 1 April 1928 and continued to serve being stationed with Durban in March 1934 and Hood in May 1937. With the latter vessel he largely served around Spain protecting shipping whilst the Spanish Civil War raged, on one occasion they rescued the crew of the SS Lake Lugano which was bombed at Palamos in 1938.
Shore pensioned on 11 July 1939 he returned to service almost immediately for the Second World War. Here he served entirely with Shore Establishments, being advanced Chief Yeoman of Signals on 7 September 1941. Scott was finally invalided on 7 March 1944; sold together with copied research and a C.D. containing a digital version of the recipient's service papers.
