William Hubert Reed was living on Penarth Road, Cardiff at the time of his volunteering to join the Gloucestershire Regiment at Bristol in August 1914. He served in France with the 1/6th Battalion from 26 June 1915 (1914-15 Star) and was thrice wounded in action by gun shot, on 29 April & 29 September 1916 and on 9 October 1917. Further admitted to hospital for phimosis in 1917, he latterly joined the Royal Air Force.

Having been made Warrant Officer, he died on 28 August 1947 and is buried in the Woodvale Cemetery and Crematorium, Brighton; sold together with two RAF brooches.
