A Great War Casualty Pair awarded to Gunner W. G. Ersser, Royal Artillery, who was killed in action on 15 September 1918

William G. Ersser was born at Lambeth and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Ersser, of 98, Lugard Rd., Peckham, London. He enlisted into the Royal Artillery at Woolwich and was killed in action on 15 September 1918 whilst serving with "D" Battery, 44th Brigade. Ersser is buried in the Roisel Communal Cemetery Extension.

His mention in the National Roll of the Great War is as follows:

He volunteered in November 1915, and in the following year proceeded to the Western Front. After a period of service there he embarked for Salonika in 1917 and saw heavy fighting during the offensive on the Dorian front in 1918 and was drafted to Egypt. Stationed at Gaza and Jerusalem he left for France shortly afterwards and took part in several engagements in the final Allied Advance. He was unfortunately killed in action on September 15th, 1918, near Cambrai, and was entitled to the General Service and Victory Medals. "And doubtless he went in splendid company".
