William John Self was born at Willesden, Middlesex. He originally enlisted at Harlesden into the Middlesex Regiment but transferred to the East Surrey Regiment. He was killed in action on 30 September 1916 whilst serving with the 8th Battalion and is buried in the Connaught Cemetery, Thiepval.
