Samuel Ashton was born at Radcliffe, Lancashire and enlisted with the 1/4th Battalion, King's Shropshire Light Infantry in Bury. Posted to France he was stationed with them when they German Spring Offensive broke over the Allied Line in March 1918. Pushed into the line on 21 March to try and slow the enemy advance they held the line at Bancourt for 24-26 March before being relieved with the Regimental History noting that they were 'now reduced to 50 men'. Ashton was killed in action on 26 March before they were relieved and is commemorated upon the Arras Memorial; sold together with copied research.
