A Great War Casualty Pair awarded to Private J. Bruce, Northumberland Fusiliers who was killed in action on 9 April 1917 whilst serving with the 27th Battalion Tyneside Irish - the same day on which two Victoria Crosses were won

John Bruce was born at Glasgow and enlisted at Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He served with the 27th Battalion (Tyneside Irish). He was killed in action on 9 April 1917 and is buried in the Orchard Dump Cemetery, Arleux-en-Gohelle.

On April 9, 1917, the Tyneside Irish Brigade, part of the 103rd (Tyneside Irish) Brigade, participated in the Battle of Arras. Specifically, they were involved in the first phase of the Battle of Arras, known as the First Battle of the Scarpe. Both Thomas Bryan and Ernest Sykes both won the Victoria Cross in this action.
