John Murdoch enlisted on 26 July 1916 and joined the 15th Reinforcements, New Zealand Engineers. This unit was primarily responsible for essential engineering tasks to support military operations, including maintaining communication systems, building and repairing railways, roads bridges, water supplies and reinforcing trenches.

James Burke worked as an Engine Driver before he enlisted into the New Zealand Expeditionary Force on 20 August 1916. He served with the 4th Battalion, New Zealand Rifle Brigade.

Sydney Lee from Wellington, New Zealand joined the First World War between 16 October and 3 December 1914 in the Wellington Infantry Battalion. During the War, his medical notes show that he sustained an injury to his right thigh (Aucklandmuseum.com, Online Cenotaph refers).

Henry Martin McLaughlan was born on 9 January 1876 in Greenock, Scotland. He worked as a labourer for 'Williams and Kettles' in Gisborne before he enlisted into the Army with the 2nd Battalion, New Zealand Rifle Brigade, where he was sent to Suez, Egypt on 8 January 1916. He had had some previous military experience, serving in the Hawke's Bay and Auckland Volunteers and B Battery, Victoria. On 15 September 1916, McLaughlan was wounded in the neck and left eye.
