A Great War Pair awarded to Private F. Cornick, 4th South African Infantry, who was killed in action on 20 September 1917 during the Third Battle of Ypres

Frank Cornick was born at Southampton, Hampshire in May 1882. He was the son of Mrs Anne Cornick, 34 Northbrook Road, Nicolstown, Southampton. Cornick enlisted at Aldershot into 173rd Coy 39th Batallion IY number 45101 on 23 May 1902 and embarked for South Africa on 28 May 1902 leaving Southampton aboard the Britannic with the 39th Batallion comprising a total of 7 officers and 305 men. He was discharged at Cape Town on 22 May 1903 and gave an intended residence of Goodstop Hotel, Bru Street, Cape Town. With the Great War continuing, Cornick re-enlists this time into the 4th South African Infantry at Potchesfstroom, near Johannesburg on 4 November 1916. He arrived at Rouen on 21 May 1917 and on 13 September 1917 arrives with his unit in Ieper. Cornick was killed in action on 20 September 1917 during the third battle of Ypres and is commemorated on the Menin Gate.
