William Henry Walter Carr was born at Halifax, Yorkshire on 11 May 1876. He moves to South Africa and works on the gold mines in the early part of the 20th Century. In 1906 he claims service in the Bambatha Rebellion with the Natal Carbineers and was discharged in February 1907, also having served with the King's Shropshire Light Infantry. He returns to work in the mines, however, on 11 October 1913 he was stopped from working below ground as a result of suffering from ill health and received compensation.
With the outbreak of the Great War, he enlists into the Rand Rifles on 17 October 1914 and was given the number 702. He was promoted to Sergeant on 7 November 1914 however he was discharged on 4 January 1915.
On 12 November 1915 Carr re-enlists as number 7184 in 2nd South African Infantry at Potchefstroom. He embarked for England on the Llansteffan Castle on 15 January 1916 however on his arrival to the U.K. spends time at both Frensham Military Hospital and Tooting Military Hospital along with several bouts of furlough. He sails from England on 14 July 1916 returning to South Africa. He was discharged at Wynberg with the rank of Sergeant on 11 August 1916. He obviously felt he could carry out further military service and re-enlists again on 13 November as number 192 South African Native Labour Corps at Cape Town. On 28 December 1916 Carr embarked on Burton at Cape Town and arrived at Le Havre on 2 February 1917 and reported for duty at Rousemesnil. Alas further service resulted in more illness and a return to South Africa where he was discharged again on 20 November 1917 at Rosebank as "having been found medically unfit for further service".
