David Rogers was born about 1896 and likely worked as a farm labourer prior to the onset of the Great War; he participated in a ploughing competition in Knighton in 1913, earning First Prize. During the War, he served as a Private in the 2nd Battalion, Shropshire Light Infantry. Rogers and his unit were disembarked in France on19 May 1915, and a few years later on 5 October 1918 he was admitted to 2nd General Hospital after suffering a gunshot wound to his left foot. After two days he was transferred to 'Formosa', likely the H.M.H.S. Formosa, a French ocean liner that had been commissioned as a hospital ship. It's not known how long Rogers spent recovering, but he survived his wound and the war to be discharged to Class Z Army Reserve on 10 February 1919.
